October is early spring at Port-aux-Français, but it feels cold, damp and grey rather than mild. Highs reach 4°C and lows sit near 1°C. Rain falls on several days, and cloud covers much of the sky. You'll get long daylight, but little sunshine.

That suits short walks around the research station when conditions allow, and watching the changing weather over the Gulf of Morbihan. It's a poor month for relaxed beach time or long hikes: wet ground, cold air and limited clear views can make both uncomfortable. Follow local guidance before leaving the station.

Events and local life

There aren't established public festivals or October holidays at Port-aux-Français. This is a remote research station, not a town with a regular visitor calendar. Life follows the work of the scientific teams and the supply ship, the Marion Dufresne.

If you're hoping for a lively event or organised sightseeing, October isn't the time to count on it. The station and its surroundings are the main focus, and access to areas beyond them depends on local rules and conditions.

Crowds and practicalities

You won't find ordinary high and low tourist seasons here, or a useful month-by-month price comparison. Access to the Kerguelen Islands is tightly limited, so visitor numbers are very small compared with mainstream destinations. The Marion Dufresne serves the islands, but a place on a voyage isn't the same as a tourist ticket.

If you hate crowds, you'll find few other visitors; the bigger challenge is getting permission to visit at all. Ask about access to Port-aux-Français before making plans, and don't assume you can wander beyond the station. October's cold, cloudy weather makes flexibility especially useful.
