Visiting Podgorica in February
February feels damp and grey
Podgorica in February is chilly, wet and often cloudy. Days reach about 8°C, while nights can dip to 1°C. Rain falls on 12 days, and you'll get only a little sun on an average day. It's not a great month for lingering outdoors.
You can still explore the compact centre between showers. Visit the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, then duck into a café around Bokeška Street. The Museum and Gallery of Podgorica is another good rainy-day stop. Gorica Hill can be pleasant in a dry spell, but muddy paths make it a poor bet after rain.
Events and a quieter city
February has no major fixed public festival in Podgorica. Valentine's Day may bring special meals at local restaurants, but it's not a citywide event. Montenegro's best-known winter carnival celebrations take place in other towns, not here.
If you hate crowds, you'll find the city calmer than in summer, when visitors use Podgorica as a base for trips around Montenegro. February is winter low season, so stays are generally less in demand than during the June-to-August peak. Some seasonal places may have shorter hours, though.
Make the most of a wet day
Plan outdoor sights around breaks in the rain, and keep long walks flexible. The Morača River can look high and fast after wet weather, so stick to paths near the Millennium Bridge rather than heading down to the water's edge.
Travelling with kids? The city's indoor museum stops are easier than a full day outside in damp weather.
For a local pause, try a bowl of kačamak, a filling dish made with cornmeal and cheese, at a traditional restaurant. Then walk through Stara Varoš, the old town, when the rain eases. Its Ottoman Clock Tower and narrow lanes are close together, so you won't need a long outing.
