Visiting New York in January
January feels cold and grey
New York in January is proper winter: days reach about 4°C, while nights can dip below freezing. Rain falls on around 10 days, and clouds often soften the daylight. Add wind between Midtown buildings, and long outdoor strolls can feel tiring.
You'll still have good options. Spend a chilly afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, catch a Broadway show, or warm up over a bowl of ramen in the East Village. Central Park is lovely after fresh snow, but paths can turn slushy. Skip plans built around hours outside, especially if rain is forecast.
A quieter month after the holidays
New Year's Day brings the Times Square area its famous cleanup, while the Three Kings Day Parade in East Harlem celebrates on January 6. The parade features music, costumes and camels. It's a lively local event, but check the route before heading over.
After the holiday rush, January is generally quieter and often cheaper for hotels than popular spring and autumn months. Crowds still gather around Broadway, museums and major sights, and holiday weekends can be busier. For budget travellers, this can be a good time to see the city without peak-season prices.
Make cold days easier
If you're travelling with kids, plan indoor stops near each other; cold, wet walks can wear everyone down fast. The subway is useful when the weather turns, but station entrances can be easy to miss in a downpour.
One New York-specific trick: use the underground passageways around Rockefeller Center to move between nearby buildings without crossing as many exposed streets. They're not a substitute for seeing the city above ground, but they can make a rainy Midtown day much more comfortable. Afterward, duck into a nearby deli for a hot pastrami sandwich.
