If you want the most pleasant weather in Kuala Lumpur, plan your trip for January and February. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 29°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over October to December; November is the wettest month with about 328 mm (12.9 in) of rain. May is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.

When to go to Kuala Lumpur: a seasonal guide

A year of heat and rain

Kuala Lumpur doesn't really have winter or summer. It's warm and humid all year, with highs of 29 to 31°C and nights that rarely feel cool. What changes is how much rain you get. Every month is rated Poor by our comfort score, so think of it as "less wet" versus "wetter."

January and February come out best. February is the driest month, with about 17 rainy days. Showers still turn up, usually as a heavy downpour in the late afternoon. Plan your outdoor stops, like Batu Caves or a walk around Lake Gardens, for the morning.

Which months suit which trip

For a city break, February is the easiest pick. You can hop between the Petronas Towers, Petaling Street and the food stalls of Jalan Alor without being soaked every day. The malls, like Pavilion and Suria KLCC, are good backup when the sky opens.

March to September sits in the middle. It's hot and sticky, and rain falls on most days, but it's often short. If you're happy with a wet afternoon and a long lunch, these months are fine. Heading on to Langkawi or the Perhentian Islands? Check their own seasons, since the coasts don't match KL.

October to December is the rainy season. November is the wettest, with 328 mm and rain on 28 days. Skies stay grey, and the sun barely shows. Streets can flood briefly, so keep your plans loose and your shoes quick-drying.

Crowds and events

KL doesn't have a sharp high season. The busiest stretches are tied to holidays, not weather. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, brings lion dances and decorations to Petaling Street, and hotels fill up. Many locals leave town, so some small shops close for a few days.

Ramadan, the fasting month, shifts each year. By day, some cafés are quiet. By evening, the Ramadan bazaars (pop-up food markets) are a highlight. Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the celebration at its end, empties the city as people head home.

Thaipusam, usually in January or February, draws huge crowds to Batu Caves. Go very early or expect a slow crawl. Merdeka Day on 31 August marks independence, with parades around Dataran Merdeka. Deepavali, the festival of lights, usually lands in October or November, and Little India glows with lights and stalls.

School holidays in March, late May to June, and December bring more families to the city. If you hate crowds, aim for the quieter weeks around them.
