When to go to Batam: a seasonal guide
Wet all year, with a slightly drier patch
Batam sits almost on the equator, so it doesn't have four seasons. It has hot, humid and rainy, with small shifts in how rainy. Every month is rated Poor on our comfort score, so be realistic. You'll get showers whenever you come.
February is the driest month, with 177 mm of rain on 16 days. That's still a lot, but it leaves more dry hours than most months. March is the other pick, and it's warmer at 30°C, though it rains on 24 days.
The wettest stretch: November to January
November is the wettest month, with 325 mm on 29 days. Only one day stays dry. December is nearly as bad, and January is cloudy and damp too. Sun drops to under two hours a day in November and December.
Beach days at Nongsa or Barelang's island beaches can wash out here. Rain does make the days a bit cooler, though, and resorts are often quieter. If you're mostly after a pool, a spa and a good book, it can work.
Which month for which trip
For a short getaway from Singapore, aim for February or March. The ferry from HarbourFront to Batam Centre takes under an hour, so you can wait for a clear forecast and go.
For the Barelang Bridges, Mangrove walks and seafood in Nagoya or Batu Ampar, any month works if you plan around showers. Mornings are often the better bet. Between April and October the weather is steadier, with a daily rain chance and warm nights around 27 to 28°C.
Hate humidity? December and January are the stickiest at 85%, even though they're a touch cooler.
Crowds and events
Batam's busiest times follow holidays, not weather. Expect more visitors from Singapore and Malaysia at Chinese New Year, which usually lands in January or February. Temples such as Vihara Budhi Bhakti get lively then. Lanterns and family meals fill the city.
Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, moves around the calendar each year. Many locals travel home, so shops close and ferries fill. Christmas and school breaks in Singapore, mainly June and December, also bring weekend queues at the ferry terminals.
Outside those dates, Batam is calm. Low season here is really just the wet months, and you may find hotel deals then.
