Visiting Kochi in January
Warm, mostly dry days
January is one of Kochi's best months, with warm days and comfortable evenings. The air still feels humid, but rain is limited, so outdoor plans are less likely to be interrupted than in December. Fort Kochi's lanes, Mattancherry Palace and the Chinese fishing nets are pleasant to explore, though the midday sun can feel strong.
You can take a ferry across the harbour or spend an afternoon at Cherai Beach. Save long walks around Fort Kochi for the cooler parts of the day, and don't expect a cool-weather break: afternoons reach 32°C.
New Year in Fort Kochi
The Cochin Carnival brings crowds to Fort Kochi around New Year. Its best-known ritual is the burning of Pappanji, a giant old-man figure, on New Year's Eve. The celebrations spill into January, with the carnival closing on January 1.
Families who enjoy street celebrations may like the festive mood, but quieter corners of Fort Kochi can be harder to find around New Year. Outside that period, January still draws plenty of visitors because the weather is good.
Busy-season practicalities
January is high season, so popular stays and waterfront restaurants can cost more than during the rainy months. Expect more people around Fort Kochi's main sights, especially during the New Year celebrations. February is similarly dry, while December is wetter.
For an easy break from road traffic, take the public ferry from Fort Kochi to Ernakulam. It's a useful local crossing, not just a sightseeing ride, and gives you a breezy view of the harbour. At Mattancherry, try a fish curry with appam, a soft rice pancake, before heading back.
