When to go to Khartoum North: a seasonal guide
December and January: the best stretch
This is the season to come. Days are warm and dry, and the evenings are cool enough for a jacket. January is the best month, with highs around 31°C and nights near 14°C. December is rated Good, and it's only a little behind. February is a step down. It starts to heat up, though mornings are still pleasant.
Khartoum North (locals call it Bahri) sits where the Blue Nile runs toward its meeting with the White Nile. In these cooler months you can walk along the riverbank and cross to Omdurman for the Friday Sufi chanting at Hamed al-Nil Tomb, which starts in the late afternoon. The big souk in Omdurman is also far easier to enjoy when you're not sweating through it. Hiring a small boat on the Nile at sunset is a good evening plan.
This is also the high season, though "crowded" is relative. Sudan gets few tourists, so the main pressure is on flights and hotel rooms from visitors with business or family ties. Check the current travel advice for Sudan before you plan anything.
March to June: the long heat
Once winter ends, it gets hot fast. March is already 37°C, and May and June are the hottest, both with highs of 42°C. Nights stay warm, around 26°C to 28°C. The air is very dry in spring, so it feels like standing near an oven rather than a sauna. All four months are rated Poor, and May is the hardest of them.
Plan indoor visits, like the National Museum in Khartoum, for the middle of the day. Keep outdoor time for after sunset, when families gather along the Nile. If you can choose, avoid this stretch. Ramadan moves through the calendar each year, so check its dates. Daytime life slows, and many cafés open only after sunset.
July to October: the rainy season
Next come the rains, which arrive in July and peak in August, the wettest month with 76 mm over 16 days. Humidity climbs and skies are often grey. Storms can flood unpaved streets in Bahri, so getting around may be slow and muddy. Sudan's famous dust storms, called haboobs, tend to roll in ahead of the rain, though they're hard to predict.
September and October dry out, but it's still hot, with highs near 38°C and 39°C. These months are the quietest for visitors, and both are rated Poor. Come only if your dates are fixed.
November: a fair shoulder month
If you can't make the cooler winter months, November is your best fallback. The rain has gone and highs ease to 36°C, with nights dropping to 19°C. It's rated Fair, so it's a sensible choice if December is full or you want the heat to have broken without waiting for midwinter.
