January feels properly wintry in Kayseri. Days reach about 6°C, while nights can drop to -3°C. Rain falls on around nine days, and cloudy skies are common, so the city can feel cold and grey. The short daylight and limited sunshine make long outdoor days less appealing.

You can still visit Kayseri Castle, the covered bazaar and the Gevher Nesibe Museum between showers. Erciyes Ski Center is the main reason to welcome winter, though snow and icy roads can disrupt trips. Save long hikes and relaxed outdoor sightseeing for warmer months.

January is usually quieter and cheaper than Kayseri's popular spring, early summer and autumn months. Ski stays may be an exception, especially around school breaks and weekends. Budget travellers who don't mind cold weather may find the city a better-value base than during those busier seasons.

Getting around in winter

Couples who prefer quiet museums and cosy meals may enjoy January more than a packed summer trip. Snow can make the journey to Erciyes slower, so allow extra time rather than squeezing in a quick ski visit from the city.

A useful local stop is the covered Kayseri bazaar near the castle. It gives you somewhere sheltered to wander when the weather turns wet, and you can warm up with mantı, Kayseri's small dumplings, at a nearby restaurant. Check conditions before travelling up to Erciyes; the mountain's weather can be tougher than downtown's.
