February feels like winter

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, as does the Lantern Festival, depending on the lunar calendar. If your visit overlaps, expect family gatherings, festive displays and some businesses to close or change their hours. Travel can also get busier around the holiday, even though February is generally quieter than the spring peony season.

For families who prefer calmer sightseeing, the weeks outside the holiday period are likely to feel easier. Hotel demand and prices are often lower than in April, when peony visitors arrive, but holiday dates can be an exception.

After a chilly walk, try Heze-style mutton soup, a local favourite served hot. It's a good reason to duck indoors before the evening chill sets in.

A practical tip: save Caozhou Peony Garden for April if seeing flowers is your main reason to go. In February, treat it as an optional stop, not the centrepiece of your trip. Use the month for indoor sights, local food and shorter walks between clear spells.
