When to go to Hagatna: a seasonal guide

Dry season: January to May

Temperatures barely change in Hagatna, so the real question is rain. From February to April it's at its best. Showers are short, the trade winds keep the air moving, and you'll get the most sunshine on the beach. February and March are the driest months, and both are rated Excellent.

January is still a good month, though it's wetter than the next three. April and May get hotter and stickier, but they suit you if you want long beach days and don't mind a shower now and then. Guam is a US territory with a big military presence, so hotels can fill up with visitors on official trips. Rooms are rarely a problem outside the main holidays.

Festivals worth planning around

Guam's biggest local event is Liberation Day on 21 July. It marks the end of Japanese occupation in 1944, and Hagatna hosts a large parade along Marine Corps Drive. It falls in the rainy season, so bring a rain jacket and expect a wet crowd.

Chamorro culture also shows up at the Chamorro Village night market in Hagatna. It runs on Wednesday evenings and is a good place to try red rice, kelaguen (lemony grilled meat or fish) and fresh coconut candy. Check that the market is running on your dates, because it can pause during storms.

Wet season: July to October

This is the part to take seriously. August and September tie for the wettest, with about 285 mm of rain and showers on 29 days. Sun drops to under two hours a day. Roads flood, snorkelling gets murky, and you'll spend plenty of time under cover. The season also brings typhoon risk, so check forecasts before you book and keep your flights flexible.

If you're on a budget, this is when prices usually fall. You'll find quieter beaches and cheaper rooms, but also grey skies. Spend the dry spells at the War in the Pacific museum or in Hagatna's Plaza de España, and save beach time for another trip.

Late year: November and December

November is still rated Poor, because rain is on 20 days and it's still sticky. December improves, and it's Good. Japanese and Korean visitors travel around the New Year holidays, so Tumon Bay, a short drive north, gets busier. Hagatna itself stays calmer.

For a first trip, aim for February or March. If you only have December, expect some showers but warm sea and decent sun.
