September feels warm and mostly settled in Funchal. Days reach 23°C, with mild evenings around 20°C. Rain is limited, and the humidity can make a sunny afternoon feel sticky, especially on steep streets.

It's a good month for wandering the Old Town, swimming at Praia Formosa, or taking the cable car up to Monte. You can also enjoy Madeira's levada walks, though wet paths can still be slippery after a shower. Save strenuous uphill walks for cooler parts of the day, rather than tackling them in the afternoon sun.

Wine and harvest

The Madeira Wine Festival often runs from late August into early September, with dates and events changing each year. In Funchal, you may find wine tastings and harvest displays; celebrations also take place in nearby Câmara de Lobos, a fishing town closely tied to Madeira wine.

If you hate crowds, go later in September. The busiest summer holiday period is easing, but Funchal remains popular, and festival events can draw visitors. Prices are often less pressured than in August, though September is still within Madeira's popular travel season.

If you fancy the traditional wicker toboggan ride back down, it starts nearby, but it only takes you partway to town. You'll need a taxi or bus for the rest of the journey.
