October: rain sets the pace

October feels warm, sticky and very wet in Douala. The high is 29°C, and the low is 23°C, but humidity stays high and sunshine is scarce. Rain is recorded on 30 days, so expect showers to interrupt plans rather than arrive as a brief afternoon surprise. It's wetter than November, though September is wetter still.

You can still visit the Doual'art contemporary art centre or browse central markets between showers. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible, and don't count on a dry beach day or clear views from the waterfront. For a city break, indoor stops and short outings are a better fit than a packed schedule.

Events and the quieter season

October has no major national public holiday in Cameroon, so there isn't a countrywide holiday rush to plan around. Douala's bigger visitor season comes in the drier months, especially December and January. October is low season by comparison, with fewer visitors and often better-value stays than during that peak; exact prices vary.

For budget travellers, this can be a calmer time to visit, as long as you're comfortable with rain affecting your plans. The wet weather can also make moving around town slower, so leave room between stops.

Getting around in the rain

A practical local tip: use a taxi for the trip between central Douala and Bonanjo's museums when streets are waterlogged. Walking can be less pleasant after heavy rain, and puddles may make short distances awkward. Ask your driver to drop you near the entrance rather than assuming the last stretch will be easy on foot.

Try ndolé, a local dish of bitter leaves and groundnuts, at a restaurant in town when a downpour keeps you indoors. It's a better October plan than waiting for clear skies at the port.
