When to go to Diyarbakir: a seasonal guide

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April, May and October are the best months here. Days are warm but not harsh, and you can walk the black basalt walls of the old city without squinting or sweating. In April the highs are around 21°C and the hills outside town turn green. November is also rated Excellent, with cooler, calmer days and fewer visitors.

Spend these months on the big sights. Climb the Ten-Eyed Bridge (On Gözlü Köprü) over the Tigris, wander the Sur district, and visit the Great Mosque (Ulu Cami). Add a day trip to Hasankeyf or Mardin if you like. Rain does fall in spring, so keep an evening free in case a day washes out.

Summer: brutally hot and dry

July and August are the hottest months, tied at 41°C, and nights barely cool off. June and September are still hot but easier. Almost no rain falls from June to September, and the sun shines for 13 to 14 hours a day in midsummer.

Is it worth going? Only if you can't pick another time. Locals head indoors from midday. You'll do better sightseeing at dawn and after sunset, and resting in a shaded courtyard or a teahouse in between. Melons, a local pride, are at their best now, and Diyarbakır's watermelon is sold everywhere. The city even holds a watermelon festival in September, though check the date locally because it can shift.

Winter: cold, grey and quiet

December and January bring wet, chilly days. January is the coldest month, with highs of 8°C and nights below freezing. Rain falls on about 11 days, and there's little sun. February and March are milder and rated Good.

This is the low season. You'll have the Sur lanes and the Dengbêj House, where traditional Kurdish storytellers sing, mostly to yourself. Warm up with a bowl of kaburga dolması (stuffed lamb ribs) or a breakfast of local cheese and honey. Pack a proper coat, since the cold feels sharper when the wind blows across the plateau.

Crowds and timing

Diyarbakır isn't a mass-tourism city, so crowds are rarely a problem. The busiest times are spring weekends and Turkish public holidays, when families visit from across the region. Nevruz, the Kurdish and Persian new year on 21 March, brings big gatherings and a lively mood in town. Expect a festive crowd and a lot of noise. If you want quiet, avoid that date. If you want to see local culture in full swing, make it the reason you come.
