Visiting Dakar in August
August: warm, wet and humid
August feels sticky rather than scorching. Days reach about 28°C, but humidity is high, skies are often cloudy and rain falls on most days. July is much drier, while September is still rainy, so don't expect a quick end to the wet season.
You can still visit the IFAN Museum or explore Dakar's markets between showers. The African Renaissance Monument is worth seeing, but its hilltop views may disappear into cloud. Beach time is less reliable, and long outdoor walks can feel draining in the damp heat. Keep your plans flexible, especially if you're heading to Île de Gorée by ferry.
Events and the city
August doesn't have one major annual Dakar festival with a fixed date. Muslim holidays follow the lunar calendar, so their timing changes each year; don't count on a particular celebration falling during your visit.
If you hate crowds, August may suit you better than Dakar's busier dry-season months. It's part of the rainy, lower season, so visitor numbers and accommodation prices are often softer than from November to May. Still, Senegalese families and visitors from abroad may be travelling during summer holidays, so popular spots can feel lively.
Make rain easier
Travelling with kids? Build in indoor breaks rather than planning a full day outside. Sudden downpours can slow traffic, and puddles make walks through busy areas less pleasant.
For Île de Gorée, take the ferry from Dakar's port and leave room in your day for weather delays. On a wet afternoon back in the city, settle into a restaurant in Plateau and try thiéboudienne, Senegal's fish-and-rice dish. A long lunch is a better fit than pushing through a soggy sightseeing route.
