Best Time to Visit Yemen

Two cities, two climates

Sanaa and Aden feel like different countries. Sanaa sits high in the mountains, so the air is thinner and cooler. Its hottest month is June at 30°C, which is warm but easy to handle. Aden is on the Gulf of Aden coast and gets properly hot. July peaks at 37°C, and the humidity makes afternoons heavy and sticky.

That's why our best-month ranges differ. Sanaa works from August to May. Aden is best from December to February, when the sea air turns mild and you can walk around Crater, the old district inside an ancient volcano rim, without wilting.

The main seasons

Yemen has a hot season and a cooler one, and rain is modest in both cities. Sanaa's wettest month is August, with just 13 mm. Aden's wettest is also August, with 33 mm. So rain rarely wrecks a plan, though short summer downpours in the highlands can make mountain roads slippery.

Winter is the sweet spot. In Sanaa, days are bright and evenings are chilly, so you'll want a jacket when you wander the Old City's tall, decorated brick houses after dark. Aden in winter is the time for the seafront and Gold Mohur beach.

Holidays and events

Yemen follows the Islamic calendar, so Ramadan and Eid dates move about 11 days earlier each year. During Ramadan, most people fast from dawn to sunset. Many cafes and restaurants close by day, and things slow down. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring family travel, closed shops and busy roads. National Day on 22 May marks unification in 1990.

High and low season

Normally, the cooler months from late autumn to early spring would be high season. Summer, especially in Aden, would be the quiet time. Yemen is different, though. Conflict has made travel very risky, and many governments advise against all travel there. Check your government's current advice before thinking about dates. Weather should be the last thing that decides your trip.
