Best Time to Visit Liberia

Dry season: December to February

If you're visiting Liberia, aim for the dry season. Our best months for Monrovia are December to February. Days are hot but bearable, skies are clearer, and you can actually enjoy the beach. Lighthouse Beach and Silver Beach are at their best then. February is the hottest month, at 31°C, so afternoons feel sticky once the sea breeze drops.

Roads are also easier now. Many routes outside the capital turn to mud in the rains. If you plan to head inland, say to Kpatawee Waterfall near Gbarnga or the forests around Sapo National Park, this is the time to do it.

The rains: roughly May to October

Monrovia is one of the wettest capitals in the world, and the rains are heavy. August is the wettest month, with 443 mm. Expect big downpours that flood low streets and slow traffic. Some roads out of the city can become hard going.

Is rain a dealbreaker? Not always. The countryside turns bright green and the crowds are thin. But beach days are mostly off, and flights or river and road trips can be disrupted. If you hate delays, skip these months.

Holidays and busy times

Liberia has no big tourist season in the usual sense. Busy periods come from people travelling home. Christmas and New Year are lively, and many Liberians living abroad come back then, so flights and hotels fill up. Independence Day on 26 July falls in the rains, but it still brings parades and events in Monrovia. Flag Day on 24 August and Thanksgiving, held on the first Thursday of November, are also public holidays, and offices and banks close.

Our advice is simple. For the best weather, come between December and February and expect the busiest flights around Christmas. For quieter streets and lower demand, try the shoulder months at the start or end of the dry season. Just be ready for some rain.
