When to visit Ireland
Two cities, one pattern
Dublin and Galway follow the same rhythm. Summer is mild, winter is damp, and December is the wettest month in both. Galway gets more rain on the west coast, so it's the wetter of the two, and it's a touch warmer in July. Dublin's best window is May to July and September. Galway's starts a month earlier, in April.
Neither city gets properly hot. July is the warmest month for both, and it feels pleasant rather than sticky. You'll still want a rain jacket, because showers can roll in on any day.
Spring to early autumn
Spring is quieter and fresher. In Galway, April works well for walks along Salthill Promenade and day trips to the Cliffs of Moher or the Burren, a stony, wild-looking landscape in County Clare. Fewer tour buses means more room on the paths.
Summer is the sweet spot for long evenings. In Dublin, you can wander St Stephen's Green or Phoenix Park after dinner and still have daylight. Galway fills with festivals in July, including the Galway International Arts Festival. Rooms get pricey and book up.
September is a smart pick if you dislike crowds. Schools are back, the weather often holds, and you'll find tables more easily in Temple Bar and around Galway's Quay Street.
Holidays, crowds and the quiet months
High season runs from June to August, when Irish and European school holidays bring families. Expect queues at the Guinness Storehouse and the Book of Kells at Trinity College.
Watch the bank holiday weekends too. St Patrick's Day on 17 March brings big parades in Dublin, and hotels fill fast. The June, August and October bank holidays also push up demand and send locals to the coast.
Winter is low season. December is dark and wet, but it's cosy. Pubs have turf or log fires, and Christmas lights brighten Grafton Street. If you're happy with short days and a flexible plan, you'll get quieter museums and lower hotel rates. Just don't count on long coastal walks.
