Road Town and the rest of the islands

Road Town is the only destination on our list. It's the capital, on Tortola, and it's where most ferries and charter boats start. The other islands, like Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada, share the same basic pattern. Anegada is flat and coral-based, so it can feel a bit drier and breezier than hilly Tortola.

The main seasons

December to April is the best stretch. Days are warm, the trade winds (steady breezes off the sea) keep things comfortable, and rain is short and light. It's ideal for sailing, snorkelling at The Baths on Virgin Gorda, and lazy afternoons at Cane Garden Bay.

September is the hottest month, at 29°C. It feels sticky, especially in town, and the sea is like bathwater. October is the wettest, with 111 mm. Expect heavy downpours that can last a while, and some days where the sky stays grey.

There's also hurricane season, which runs from June to November. The risk peaks from August to October. Storms are not likely on any given week, but they do happen, and Hurricane Irma hit hard in 2017. If you travel then, get flexible bookings and travel insurance that covers storms.

Holidays, events and crowds

High season runs from December to April. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive, with boats and beach bars packed. Easter also fills up. If you hate crowds, aim for late January or March.

Carnival-style celebrations matter here. The BVI Emancipation Festival happens around late July and early August, with parades, music and street food in Road Town. It's lively and fun, but rooms get scarce, so you'll want to sort a place early.

Low season is roughly September to November. Some restaurants, small hotels and charter operators close for a few weeks, especially in October. The upside is quiet beaches and lower rates. Travelling with kids? May and early June are a good middle ground, with fewer people and less rain than autumn.
