Visiting Bridgetown in January
January: warm and mostly sunny
January feels warm from morning to evening, with little change between daytime and night. You'll get plenty of sun for a walk around historic Bridgetown, a swim at Carlisle Bay or a visit to the Barbados Museum. Rain falls on some days, but it's less frequent than in December and usually needn't rule out a day outside.
The sea breeze can make a walk along the Careenage feel more comfortable than the shaded streets inland. If you're planning a longer sightseeing day, keep the Garrison and central Bridgetown for different parts of the day. Sticky afternoons can make a long stretch on foot tiring.
Events and busy streets
New Year's Day is a public holiday, so some businesses may close or keep shorter hours. Barbados Sailing Week also takes place in January, with races off the island's coast. Check the event schedule if you want to watch, as race locations and dates can vary.
If you hate crowds, January may not be your quietest choice. It's part of Barbados's high season, when winter visitors from North America and Europe fill hotels and popular beaches. Prices are generally higher than in the quieter summer months. The upside is a lively feel around town and plenty of company at Carlisle Bay.
Make the most of your visit
January is one of the best months for Bridgetown, but it's not the driest: February gets less rain. A passing shower can interrupt a beach afternoon, so keep the Barbados Museum or the shops on Broad Street in mind as a break from the weather.
Travelling with kids? Head to Carlisle Bay, then take a short walk to Cuz's Fish Shack near Pebbles Beach for a fish cutter—a local sandwich. Check opening times before you go, since the shack doesn't keep regular hours.
