Visiting Bergen in October
October weather in Bergen
October feels cool, damp and often grey. Highs reach 9°C and lows fall to 5°C, with rain on 21 days. The air is very humid, and you'll get only about two hours of sunshine a day. Compared with September, it's cooler and wetter; November is colder but a little less rainy.
You can still enjoy Bryggen's wooden lanes, museums and cafés between showers. The Bergen International Film Festival, known as BIFF, usually brings film screenings to the city in October. For a rainy afternoon, duck into KODE's art museums rather than spending hours on exposed viewpoints.
What to do, and what to skip
A walk around the harbour or a short ride on the Fløibanen funicular can work when skies are clear. But cloud cover is common, so don't count on wide views from Mount Fløyen. Long hikes on wet trails can be slippery, and beach weather is unlikely. Keep outdoor plans flexible and have an indoor stop in mind.
Families may find the museums and BIFF screenings easier than a full day outdoors. Just check film age ratings before choosing a screening.
Crowds and local tips
October is quieter than July, Bergen's best-known summer month. You'll usually find fewer visitors around Bryggen and the Fløibanen, and accommodation often costs less than in peak summer. It isn't empty, though: BIFF can bring extra visitors for screenings.
If you're taking the Fløibanen, look up at the summit conditions before riding. When cloud sits over Fløyen, stay in the city and visit the fish market area or KODE instead; the trip is less rewarding without a view. At dinner, try raspeballer, a traditional potato dumpling dish that suits a chilly, rainy evening.
