September is not the best time to visit Agra (3.9/10) mainly because of the heat. The weather is much better in November to February.
Visiting Agra in September
September: hot and damp
Agra stays hot in September, with daytime highs around 34°C and nights near 24°C. Humidity is high, and rain falls on many days, often leaving the air sticky and the pavements wet. August is wetter, but September still isn't a dry month. The cooler, drier weather of October is more comfortable for long days out.
You can visit the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Itimad-ud-Daulah between showers. Cloud can soften the light for photos, but rain may interrupt rooftop views and outdoor walks. Skip long stretches in the open during the hottest part of the day; the gardens at Mehtab Bagh are more pleasant later.
Festivals and quieter days
Janmashtami, celebrating Krishna's birth, sometimes falls in September, though its date changes each year. Nearby Mathura is known for its Krishna celebrations, so you may find more activity there than around Agra's main sights. September isn't one of Agra's big festival months.
Visitor numbers are generally lower than in the November-to-February high season. That can mean less waiting at the Taj Mahal and better-value stays than in the cooler months, though local prices vary. Families who prefer calmer visits may like the quieter feel, but the heat and rain can make a full sightseeing day tiring.
A practical Taj tip
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so check the weekday before travelling to the entrance. On other days, rain can leave the marble paths slippery; take care around the reflecting pool and keep your visit flexible if showers roll in. The eastern gate area is useful for finding food after your visit, including petha, Agra's famous sweet made from ash gourd. Choose a covered café there if the afternoon turns wet.
