April: hot and very wet

April feels sticky, with warm days and nights and frequent rain. The average high is 30°C, and rain falls on 28 days of the month. Cloudy skies and limited sunshine can make a beach day less appealing, while sudden showers can interrupt long walks.

You can still enjoy Abidjan's indoor stops, including the Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire in Plateau, then duck into a restaurant for attiéké, a local cassava dish. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible and avoid relying on a long walk through the city without shelter.

What to do between showers

If you hate crowds, April may suit you: it's generally quieter than the drier months, and hotel demand may be lower than in the January high season. The trade-off is the damp, humid weather, which can make getting around feel tiring.

When Easter falls in April, Easter Monday is a public holiday in Côte d'Ivoire. Some businesses may close or change their hours, so don't assume the city will run as usual that day. Easter's date changes each year, and it can also fall in March.

Getting around in the rain

Travelling with kids? Keep outings short and choose places where you can shelter if a downpour starts. April is wetter than March, and May is wetter still, so don't count on the rain easing later in the month.

For a local route, try an SOTRA boat-bus across Ébrié Lagoon between Plateau and Treichville. It can be a useful break from road traffic, but heavy rain may affect the crossing. Check service locally before setting out, and have a road option in mind.
