When to go to Yamoussoukro: a seasonal guide
December to February: the dry, sunny stretch
December is your best bet, and our comfort score agrees. Days are hot but not heavy, mornings are fresher, and you get around seven hours of sun. Rain is rare. January is even drier, with the sunniest days of the year, though it gets hotter. By February the showers start creeping back.
This is the season for the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, the huge domed church that dominates the skyline. You can walk the grounds without squelching through mud. It's also good for the presidential palace area and its famous crocodile lake, where the sacred caimans are fed in the late afternoon. Day trips by road to Bouaké or Abidjan are easier when the roads aren't flooded.
March to July: hot, then properly wet
March and April are still hot, but the rain turns up almost daily. Humidity climbs fast and the sky stays grey. June is the wettest month, with rain on nearly every day. It feels sticky even at night.
Is it a terrible time to visit? Not always. The countryside turns deep green, and hotels are quiet. Plan your sightseeing around the downpours, which often come in the afternoon. Keep the basilica and the Fondation Félix Houphouët-Boigny for wet days, since both are mostly indoors or under cover. Dirt roads outside town can get rough.
August to November: a short breather, then more rain
August is a little drier, but it's still cloudy. September and October bring the second rainy season. October has rain on every single day of the month, so don't count on any dry window. November is a slow turn toward better weather, with more sun and fewer wet days.
If you want to cut costs and avoid other visitors, late November is a fair compromise. Just expect some showers.
Crowds and events
Yamoussoukro is not a big tourist town, so there's no packed season. The busiest times come with Christmas and New Year, when families travel across the country. Rooms can fill then, so December is the one month where booking ahead is worth it. Easter weekend also brings pilgrims and church visitors to the basilica. Ivory Coast's Independence Day on 7 August is a national holiday, and you'll notice it in town, even in the rain. Outside those dates, you'll often have the sights to yourself.
