Summer and early autumn: the easy months
From May to September, Ufa is at its best. May feels fresh, with highs around 19°C and trees filling out along the Belaya River. June to August is warm without being punishing. July is the warmest month, with highs of 25°C and the most sun. Rain falls on 14 days in June and July, but these are mostly short showers, so you'll rarely lose a whole day.
This is the time for walking the Belaya embankment, climbing up to the Salavat Yulaev monument for the river view, and wandering Gostiny Dvor, the old trading arcade in the centre. It's also the time to get out of the city. The Shulgan-Tash cave and the Nugush reservoir area are much easier in these months. Honey from Bashkortostan is a local pride, so look for it at markets.
Early September is lovely and calmer. Days stay mild, but the sun fades fast, down to about four hours a day by the end of the month.
Winter and the shoulder months
Winter here is long, dark and properly cold. From December to February, highs stay between -9°C and -12°C, and the sun shows for only two or three hours a day. If you hate the cold, skip it. If you like snow and quiet streets, it can be cosy. Try hot tea with chak-chak, a sweet honey-coated dough treat, and a heavy bowl of beshbarmak, boiled meat with noodles.
Skiers and snowboarders can head to resorts in the southern Urals, such as Abzakovo, though that's a long drive from the city. March is still frozen, with lows of -11°C.
April and October are the awkward ones. Both are rated Poor or Fair for good reason. April brings thaw and mud, and October is grey and damp, with just 2.7 hours of sun a day. November is worse, as the cold returns without any snow charm.
Crowds and events
Ufa never gets overrun. Summer is the busiest time, mostly with Russian visitors and families during school holidays from June to August. Even then, hotels and sights feel easy.
The big cultural date is Sabantuy, a Tatar and Bashkir spring-and-summer festival of horse racing, wrestling and folk music. Dates vary by town, so check locally. Another is Kurultai, the Bashkir national assembly, but it's more of a political gathering than a tourist event.
If you want warm weather and fewer people, pick late August or early September. Travelling with kids? June and July suit them best, with long days and open-air spaces.
