Best Time to Visit Paramaribo
Suriname · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
Weather-wise, September and October is the best time to visit Paramaribo. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 28°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over April to July; May is the wettest month with about 308 mm (12.1 in) of rain. May is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Paramaribo: a seasonal guide
Two wet seasons, two dry ones
Paramaribo sits just north of the equator, so the temperature barely moves. It's warm all year, with highs of 28°C to 31°C and nights that stay around 25°C. What changes is the rain.
The long wet season runs from April to July. May is the wettest month, with 308 mm, and by July it rains on 30 days. That doesn't mean all-day downpours. Expect heavy bursts, steamy air and grey skies. A shorter wet spell comes from December to February, then eases in March.
September and October: the best bet
The main dry season is from August to early November, and September and October are the pick. They're the hottest months, at 31°C, but they have the most sun and the least rain. Mornings are good for walking the old wooden centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can wander from Independence Square to Fort Zeelandia and the Palmentuin (a palm garden) without getting soaked.
These months also suit day trips. Boats up the Suriname River to plantations and Jungle Lodges are easier when the roads and river banks aren't mud. Nature fans heading into the rainforest will find the trails drier too.
If you want a quieter trip, August and November work. August is drier than the wet season, and November still has some breaks in the rain.
Crowds, events and when to go
Paramaribo never gets swamped. The busiest time is the dry season, plus the Dutch school holidays in summer and around Christmas, when many Surinamese families visit from the Netherlands. Flights and rooms can tighten then.
Late December and January are lively. Christmas and New Year bring fireworks and parties, though it's rainy. Phagwah (Holi), the Hindu spring festival, falls in March. People throw coloured powder and water in the streets. Keti Koti, on 1 July, marks the end of slavery and is a big day of remembrance. It lands in the wet season, so bring a rain jacket. Independence Day on 25 November is another national moment.
Hate the rain but want culture? Time it for March. It's the driest of the wet-ish months, and Phagwah is a joy to watch. Want the easiest sightseeing? Go in September or October.
