When to go to Oslo: a seasonal guide
June: the sweet spot
June is our top pick for Oslo, and it's easy to see why. Highs sit around 19°C, the evenings seem endless, and the sunniest days of the year fall here. Around midsummer it barely gets dark. Locals stay out on the terraces along Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen until late.
It does rain, on about 14 days, so treat showers as part of the deal. The upside is that you can swim off Hovedøya island or catch the ferry out to the fjord islands and still have light for dinner. Kids are out of school from late June, so it gets busier as the month goes on.
July and August: warm, wetter, busiest
July is the warmest month, with highs near 21°C. It's also much wetter than June, with rain on 18 days. Norwegians take their main holiday in July, and many locals leave town. The city feels calmer in places, though some smaller restaurants close for a few weeks.
Travelling with kids? This is your window. The Viking Ship Museum area and Bygdøy beaches work well, and the Tusenfryd amusement park is open. Pack a rain jacket for the Vigeland Park stroll. August is the wettest month, at 128 mm, but it stays mild. The Øya Festival, a big music event at Tøyen, usually runs in early August.
Spring and September: quieter and cheaper
May brings long days and fresh green in the parks, with highs around 15°C. On 17 May, Norway's national day, the city fills with brass bands, folk costumes and children's parades along Karl Johans gate. It's a joy, but book rooms early.
September cools to about 16°C and the crowds thin out. Hiking in Nordmarka, the forest north of the city, is lovely, with autumn colour near the end of the month. April is cool and changeable, and a good pick if you like quiet museums and don't mind a coat.
Winter: dark, cold and cosy
From November to March, you get short days. January has just over an hour of sun a day, and highs stay below freezing. It's damp and grey, and the cold feels sharper than the numbers.
Still, winter has its own pull. Take the metro up to Frognerseteren and go sledging down the Korketrekkeren run, or ski the trails around Holmenkollen. Museums, saunas and cafés are at their best then. If you want snow, aim for February or early March. Late autumn is the weakest stretch: October and November are dark and wet without the snow.
