Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April and May are the easy winners. Days are warm but not heavy, around 20°C in April and 25°C in May, and the rain is mostly behind you. It's good weather for walking the Kemeraltı bazaar, climbing to Kadifekale castle for the view, or taking a day trip to the ruins at Ephesus without melting.
October and November work well too. The sea still holds some summer warmth early on, and the Aegean towns near Izmir, like Alaçatı and Foça, feel calm. By November the rain is back, so keep a plan B for wet afternoons, like the Izmir Archaeology Museum. September is also rated Excellent, and it's a good pick if you want beach days with fewer people.
Summer: hot, dry and busy on the coast
June is the gentle start. It's hot, sunny and still dry enough for the beach. July and August are the hottest months, both at 34°C, and they're almost rain-free. Midday in the city is tough. Do your sightseeing early or late, and spend the afternoon by the water in Çeşme or at the Alsancak seafront with an iced drink.
This is high season for Turkish families, because school is out. Beach towns fill up and rooms cost more. If you hate crowds, aim for June or September instead. In late summer, the Izmir International Fair in Kültürpark has traditionally been a big event, though it's worth checking current dates. The International Izmir Festival, a music and arts season, usually runs in June and July, often with shows at Ephesus.
Winter: mild, grey and quiet
December to February is the wet season. January is the rainiest month, with 130 mm over 12 days, and the sun shows up for only about four hours a day. It's not freezing, with highs of 12-14°C, but it's damp and grey.
The upside is that you'll have the city nearly to yourself. It suits food-focused trips: try a boyoz, a flaky local pastry, with a strong tea at a seafront café while the rain passes. Beach plans are off, though. If you're travelling with kids who want to swim, come later. March is a good bridge month. It's still showery, but the rating jumps to Excellent and the hills outside the city turn green.
