When to visit U.S. Virgin Islands
Dry season: January to April
Charlotte Amalie is the main town on St. Thomas, and it's at its best from January to April. Days are sunny, and the air feels warm without being heavy. This is high season, so expect full ferries, busy beaches and cruise ships docked at Havensight and the Crown Bay pier. If you hate crowds, aim for the April end, after spring break wraps up.
Magens Bay is the famous beach, and it gets packed on cruise-ship days. Try Coki Beach for snorkelling, or hop the ferry to St. John for Trunk Bay and the Virgin Islands National Park trails. Hikes like Reef Bay Trail are much more pleasant when the air isn't sticky.
Summer and early autumn: hot and quieter
September is the hottest month at 29°C, and the afternoons feel it. The sea is warm, though, and you'll often have beaches mostly to yourself. Many hotels drop their rates, and some small restaurants and guesthouses close for a few weeks. It's worth checking before you commit.
Hurricane season runs from June to November. The risk peaks from late August through October, and October is also the wettest month, with 140 mm of rain. Rain often comes as short, heavy bursts, but a named storm can shut down ferries and flights. Travel insurance that covers hurricanes is a smart buy for these months.
Holidays and events
Christmas and New Year are the priciest and busiest weeks, so the islands fill up fast. Carnival on St. Thomas comes in late April and early May, with parades, steel pan music and a big village party in Charlotte Amalie. It's a great time to visit, but rooms get tight.
Other dates that shift crowds include Presidents' Day weekend, spring break in March, and U.S. holidays like Memorial Day. Transfer Day on 31 March marks the 1917 handover from Denmark to the U.S.
If you want good weather and fewer people, try May or early June. You'll miss the winter rush and most of the storm risk.
