Best Time to Visit Samoa

Dry season: May to October

If you want the easiest weather, aim for the dry season. Our data picks August as the best month for Apia, and it makes sense. Days are warm but less sticky, the rain eases off, and the trade winds keep evenings pleasant. It's the time for swimming at To Sua Ocean Trench, a big sea-filled sinkhole on Upolu's south coast, and for lazy days at Lalomanu Beach.

This is also high season. Flights and beach fales (open-sided huts with thatched roofs) fill up in July and August, when many Samoans living in New Zealand and Australia fly home to visit family. If you hate crowds, try May or September.

Wet season: November to April

January is both the hottest and the wettest month in Apia, with highs around 29°C and about 266 mm of rain. Expect heavy downpours, sticky afternoons and clouds that can hang around for days. Between showers, the sun comes out hard and the island steams.

It's also cyclone season. Most years pass without a direct hit, but storms can close roads and cancel flights, so travel insurance matters here. The upside is quiet beaches, lush green waterfalls like Papase'ea Sliding Rock, and lower demand for rooms. Christmas and New Year are busy with family visits, so those weeks feel fuller than the rest of the wet season.

Events and where to go

Apia is our only listed destination, so one picture covers most trips. Its weather also works well as a guide for Upolu, the main island. Savai'i, the larger and quieter island, usually follows the same seasons. Ferries from Upolu can be rough in wet weather.

Independence Celebrations in early June are the big national event. Apia fills with fautasi (long-boat) races, dancing and food, and many shops close for the public holidays. White Sunday in October is another special day. Children take centre stage in church, then everyone shares a big family meal. On Sundays in general, much of the country slows down for church, so plan your day trips around that.
