When to visit Niger
Niamey and the rest of Niger
Our site covers Niamey, the capital, which sits on the Niger River in the far southwest. That's the greener, wetter corner of the country. Head north and things change fast. Agadez and the Aïr Mountains are dry desert, and the Sahara takes over beyond them. Nights up there get properly cold in winter, and days stay hot for most of the year.
For almost every trip, the best window is December and January. We only list Niamey, so the rest of this page leans on it.
The seasons
Niamey has three moods. From December to February it's dry and the days are comfortable. The harmattan, a dusty wind from the Sahara, can turn the sky hazy, so photos may look flat. Evenings by the river are pleasant, and it's the easiest time to walk around the Grand Marché or visit the National Museum.
March to May is the hot season. April is the hottest month at 41°C. Afternoons feel like an oven, and you'll want to stay indoors from midday until the sun drops.
The rains arrive around June and peak in August, the wettest month at 200 mm. Storms are short and heavy. Dirt roads outside the capital can turn to mud, and some become impassable. The land is green, though, and the river runs high.
Events, holidays and crowds
Niger is mostly Muslim, so Ramadan shapes daily life. Cafés and some restaurants close by day, and working hours shift. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring family gatherings and busy transport. The dates move about eleven days earlier each year, so check them before you book.
The big cultural draw is the Cure Salée near In-Gall, a gathering of Wodaabe and Tuareg herders around the end of the rains. Dates vary and travel in the north depends on current security advice. Check your government's guidance before planning anything outside Niamey.
High and low season
High season is November to February. It's cool and dry, so flights and guesthouses fill up first. Low season runs from April to September, when it's either brutally hot or wet. If you can handle the heat, you'll get quiet streets and easier bookings. For most visitors, though, December or January is the sweet spot.
