When to visit New Zealand

Summer is the sweet spot

If you want one answer, aim for January to March. All three cities are at their best then. Days are long and mild, beaches are open, and hiking tracks are dry. Auckland and Christchurch both peak at 24°C, and Wellington tops out at 19°C in February. Wellington feels cooler because the wind off Cook Strait rarely switches off.

The catch is crowds. Kiwis take their main holiday from Christmas to late January, so beach towns, campsites and the ferry between Wellington and Picton fill up. Waitangi Day on 6 February is a public holiday, and it makes for a busy long weekend. If you hate crowds, come in late February or March. The weather is still good, and things calm down.

Winter and the shoulder months

July is the wettest month in all three cities. Auckland gets the most rain at 130 mm, with Wellington at 98 mm and Christchurch at 92 mm. Expect grey, damp days in Auckland and cold, crisp ones in Christchurch. Winter isn't a write-off, though. It's low season in the cities, so rooms are easier to find. It's also when skiers head south to the Southern Alps, around Queenstown and Wanaka. Those towns are busy in the school holidays, which fall in July.

Auckland has a longer good spell than the others. November is also on its best list, so it's a smart pick for spring. You'll get warming days before the summer rush. Gardens are in bloom, and the ferry to Waiheke Island is far less packed.

Which city, when?

Heading north? Auckland suits you almost any time outside winter. Its harbour, island ferries and west coast beaches like Piha work well from November to March. Christchurch is the one for dry, settled summer days. It's a good base for the Banks Peninsula and the drive to Lake Tekapo. Wellington is compact and best on a calm day. Walk the waterfront and ride the cable car, then duck into Te Papa, the national museum, if the wind picks up.

Travelling with kids? Aim for early or mid-January, but only if you've booked well ahead. Want fewer people? March is your month.
