Best Time to Visit Monaco

One small place, one climate

Monaco is tiny, so there's no regional split to worry about. The whole country shares one Mediterranean climate. Our site covers just Monaco itself, and the best window runs from May to September.

Within that, the sea and the streets feel different. Monte-Carlo, La Condamine (the port district) and Fontvieille all sit within a short walk or a quick lift ride of each other. You can cover them in a day in any season.

Summer: warm, busy and pricey

August is the hottest month at 26°C. That's warm, not scorching, and the sea breeze helps along the Port Hercule waterfront. Swimming is best from June to September. Larvotto, the main public beach, is lovely then, though it fills up on weekends.

Summer is high season. Hotels cost the most and the harbour fills with superyachts. If you hate crowds, aim for late May or September. You'll still get beach weather with more room on the pavements.

Events that shape your trip

The Monaco Grand Prix, usually in late May, is the big one. The streets around the harbour and the Casino turn into the track. Rooms book out and prices jump, so if you only want sightseeing, pick another week. If you love racing, it's worth the squeeze.

Monaco National Day is on 19 November. It's a local celebration with a royal feel, and the Prince's Palace area is lively. The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament is held in spring at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, just over the border.

Winter and the quiet months

November is the wettest month at 123 mm, so expect grey, damp days. That's the time for the Oceanographic Museum, the Casino's interior and the Prince's Palace, rather than coastal walks. Cooler months are quiet and hotels are easier to find.

Winter does have a bright side. The Christmas market and ice rink on Port Hercule give the harbour a cosy feel in December. Travelling in the cooler months? Pick your outdoor days carefully and keep indoor plans for the rainy ones.
