When to visit Macao

Macau at a glance

Macao is small, so there's really one climate to plan around. The Macau peninsula, Taipa and Coloane all share the same weather. The only real difference is how it feels. Old streets around Senado Square can feel close and muggy in summer, while Coloane's trails and Hac Sa beach get more breeze.

The best months are November to February. Days are dry, clear and comfortable for walking. You can wander from the Ruins of St. Paul's to Mount Fortress without sweating through your shirt. Evenings are cool enough for a stroll along the Taipa Village food streets, or a bowl of congee or an egg tart at a café.

Hot, wet months

July is the hottest month, at 30°C. June is the wettest, with 308 mm of rain. Expect sticky afternoons and sudden heavy downpours. Typhoon season runs through the summer into early autumn, and a strong storm can close ferries, casinos and attractions for a day or so. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge and ferries can both be disrupted, so leave some slack before a flight home.

The upside? Summer is the cheaper time to visit, and the big casino resorts on the Cotai Strip are a handy escape from the rain. If you don't mind the weather, you'll find the quietest sights outside the holidays.

Holidays and crowds

Crowds follow the calendar more than the weather. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, is the busiest and most colourful time, with lion dances and fireworks. Golden Week, the first week of October after National Day on 1 October, brings huge crowds from mainland China. Labour Day on 1 May has a similar rush.

The Macau Grand Prix in November is a big event. The streets become a racetrack, hotels fill up and some roads close. If you love motorsport, it's great. If you hate crowds, avoid that weekend.

For the best mix of good weather and calmer streets, try late November or early March, but skip the holiday weeks. Travelling with kids? Local school holidays in summer are busy at family spots, though not as packed as Golden Week.
