When to visit Lesotho
Maseru and the mountains
Our data covers Maseru, the capital, which sits in the western lowlands. It's the warmest, lowest part of the country. The mountains are a different story. Places like Semonkong, Thaba-Bosiu's surrounding hills and the high passes such as Mokhoro and Sani are noticeably colder. Winter nights up there can be bitterly cold, and snow isn't unusual. Maseru's best months suit the lowlands. For the highlands, think about what you want to do first.
The seasons
Summer runs from about November to March. January is the hottest month in Maseru at 29°C, and December is the wettest at 109 mm. Rain usually comes as afternoon thunderstorms. They can turn dirt roads muddy and make river crossings tricky if you're pony trekking or driving off the tarmac. The green hills look lovely, though, and Maletsunyane Falls near Semonkong runs strongest.
April and May are calm and clear, with mild days and cool evenings. August to October is the other sweet spot. Winter fades, the air is dry and the countryside warms up again. These months suit hiking, village visits and drives over the Sani Pass from South Africa.
June and July are the cold, dry heart of winter. Days can be sunny and pleasant, but mornings are frosty. If you want to see snow, or try Afriski, the country's small ski resort in the Maluti Mountains, this is your window.
Holidays and crowds
Lesotho is quiet compared with most travel spots, so "high season" is more about South African visitors. They arrive in the December holidays, around Easter and during winter for the snow. Book mountain lodges early for those times.
Moshoeshoe's Day on 11 March honours the founder of the Basotho nation. Independence Day on 4 October is another national holiday. Shops and some services close, so plan your supplies for those dates.
If you want empty trails and easy lodging, aim for April–May or September. You'll get good weather without the school-holiday rush.
