Pristina and the rest of Kosovo

Our site covers Pristina, and the best time there is July to October. Most of Kosovo follows the same pattern, but the mountains don't. The Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemura) near Peja and the Sharr range near Prizren get snow long after the capital has turned to slush. If you're heading for trails like the Rugova Valley, think of mid-June to September as your window.

Seasons: what to expect

Summer is warm, and August is the hottest month at around 30°C. Afternoons in Pristina feel dry and bright, and evenings on Mother Teresa Boulevard are the time to be out, with cafés spilling onto the pavement. Early autumn is just as pleasant, with cooler days and fewer people. It's a good time for wine country around Rahovec and for day trips to Prizren's old stone bridge and fortress.

Winter is cold and grey in the capital. Skiing at Brezovica is the reason to come then, and the snow is usually best in January and February. November is the wettest month in Pristina at 83 mm, so expect muddy streets and low cloud. Spring is mild but changeable, and it's a fair time for city walks if you carry a rain jacket.

Holidays, events and crowds

Independence Day on 17 February brings flags, concerts and a festive feel to Pristina. Expect some shops and offices to close. Both Eid holidays and Orthodox and Catholic Christmas and Easter are also observed, and their dates move, so check them before you book.

August is when the diaspora comes home. Many Kosovars living in Switzerland and Germany return to visit family, so roads, border crossings and weddings get busy. DokuFest, the documentary film festival in Prizren, is held each summer and fills guesthouses, so lock in a bed early if you're going.

High season is July and August, though it's gentle compared with coastal Europe. Low season runs from November to March, apart from the ski weeks. If you want quiet streets and good weather together, aim for September.
