Best Time to Visit Kiribati

One country, very spread out

Kiribati is a string of low coral islands scattered across a huge stretch of the Pacific. Our site covers Tarawa, the capital, so that's what the data below describes. Tarawa sits close to the equator, so the year doesn't swing between hot and cold. It swings between drier and wetter.

Islands further away can behave differently. The Line Islands, including Kiritimati (Christmas Island), are a long flight from Tarawa. Rain patterns there don't always match. Check locally before you plan a trip beyond the capital.

Dry months and wet months

October and November are the best months for Tarawa. Rain is lighter, the air feels a little easier, and the lagoon is calm enough for relaxed days on the water. You can wander the causeways between islets without running for cover.

March is the wettest month, at 181 mm. Expect heavy downpours that pass quickly, then steamy, sticky air. Roads can flood in low spots, and flights can shift around. If you're keen on diving or fishing, heavy weather is the thing to watch.

June is the hottest month, at 29°C. That's warm rather than extreme, but there's little shade on the flat atolls, so midday feels strong. Do your walking in the morning and rest during the afternoon.

Holidays, events and crowds

Tarawa doesn't have a tourist high season like a resort island. Visitors are few all year, mostly people on business, aid work, fishing or diving trips. That means you'll rarely fight crowds, but flights and guesthouse rooms are limited and can fill fast.

Independence Day on 12 July is the big national moment. Expect dancing, singing and sports around Bairiki, the government area. It's a great time to see local culture, but plan for a busy week and tighter transport. Christmas and New Year are also major family times, and many businesses slow down.

Travelling with kids? The calmer months are easier. If you want the best mix of weather and quiet, aim for late October.
