Georgetown: the one city we cover

Georgetown is our only Guyana destination, so this guide leans on it. The best months here are February to March and September. Those are your best bets for walking the city, with its white wooden buildings, St George's Cathedral and the Stabroek Market, a big cast-iron market by the river.

Guyana's interior is a different story. The Rupununi savannah and the rainforest around Kaieteur Falls have their own rhythm, and we don't have data for them. Rain in the interior often doesn't match the coast, so check locally before you book a trip inland.

Rainy and drier seasons

The coast has two wet seasons and two drier ones. The big wet season runs from about May to July, and May is the wettest month in Georgetown at 308 mm. Expect heavy downpours, flooded streets in low spots and muddy roads if you head inland. Rivers rise, and some jungle lodges get harder to reach.

September is the hottest month at 29°C, but it's also one of our best months. It's drier, and the heat feels manageable with a sea breeze along the Seawall, the long coastal wall where locals gather in the evening. There's a shorter wet spell around December and January, then a drier patch in February and March.

Holidays, events and crowds

Mashramani, on 23 February, is Guyana's Republic Day. It's a carnival with costumes, steel pan music and floats through Georgetown. February is a good month anyway, so it's a smart time to visit if you like a party. Rooms fill up, so sort out your stay early.

Phagwah (Holi) in March brings coloured powder and music, and Easter is also big, with kite flying on the Seawall on Easter Monday. Christmas and the weeks around it are busy, since many Guyanese living abroad come home.

High season is mostly December to March, with another small bump in September for birders and nature trips. May to July is the quieter, wetter stretch. You'll find easier bookings then, but plan for rain, and for delays if you're flying to the interior.
