Best Time to Visit Guernsey

One town, one island

Saint Peter Port is the only place on our site for Guernsey, so the timing advice here covers the whole island. It's small, and the weather doesn't change much from one side to the other. The west coast beaches, like Vazon and Cobo, catch more Atlantic wind. The sheltered east, around the harbour, often feels calmer.

June to September: the best stretch

This is when we'd go. August is the warmest month, but only reaches 18°C. That means pleasant days, not sticky ones. You can swim at Petit Bot or Portelet if you don't mind cool water. The cliff path along the south coast is at its best, with long evenings and good light.

Late June to early September is also high season. Ferries from Poole and Portsmouth and flights from the UK fill up, and school holidays push prices and crowds up. Even so, it's never packed like a big resort. Guernsey stays quiet and easy to move around.

Look at the calendar for events. The Viking Raid and other summer shows draw visitors, and Liberation Day on 9 May is the island's big national holiday. The town fills with music, flags and street parties. If you like local celebrations, it's worth timing a trip around it. Book a hotel early for that weekend.

October to May: quieter and wetter

Autumn gets wetter quickly. November is the wettest month, with 114 mm of rain. Grey, windy days are common, and some seasonal cafés and boat trips to Herm (a tiny car-free island) cut back or close. Ferries can also be disrupted by rough seas.

Winter is low season. You'll get cosy pubs, empty cliff paths and cheaper rooms. Saint Peter Port's Victor Hugo house, Castle Cornet and the market are good wet-day stops. Don't expect beach weather.

Spring is a good middle option. May and early June bring wildflowers on the cliffs and fewer visitors. Travelling with kids? Aim for the summer holidays, when everything is open. If you hate crowds, pick late May or September.
