Best Time to Visit Falkland Islands

Stanley is the hub, and summer is the sweet spot

Most trips to the Falklands start in Stanley, the small capital on East Falkland. It's the only city on our site, so the timing here is simple. November to March is the best stretch.

Summer is when the wildlife is busiest. Penguins are nesting and raising chicks at places like Volunteer Point, where you can see king penguins. Day trips from Stanley go by 4x4 over rough tracks, and the weather decides if they run. Many visitors also fly to outer islands such as Sea Lion Island, and those small planes can be delayed by wind.

What the seasons feel like

January is the hottest month, at 13°C. That's mild, not beach weather. The wind is the real story. It blows most days, so a sunny afternoon on Stanley Harbour can still feel sharp. Evenings are long and light, which helps if you want time on the coast walks.

Winter runs roughly June to August. It's cold, dark early and quieter. Some lodges and tours scale back. April is the wettest month at 66 mm, which isn't huge, but it's a good reason to skip it if you want clear days for hiking. If you like empty landscapes and don't mind short days, winter has its own appeal. You'll have Stanley's pubs and the Historic Dockyard Museum almost to yourself.

Events, holidays and crowds

High season matches the summer window, and it's also when cruise ships call at Stanley. On those days the town centre fills up fast. If you hate crowds, check which days ships are in port and head out of town those mornings.

Liberation Day on 14 June marks the end of the 1982 war and is a major local holiday. It's a meaningful time to be in Stanley, though it falls in winter, so expect cold weather. Battlefield tours around Mount Tumbledown and Mount Longdon are open to visitors in other months too.

Christmas and New Year are popular with locals and visitors alike, so flights and rooms fill early. Travelling with kids? The long summer days make wildlife outings much easier.
