When to visit Eswatini
Mbabane and the rest of the country
Our data covers Mbabane, the capital, which sits up in the cool highlands of the northwest. It's the mildest part of Eswatini. Head east to the Lubombo lowlands, where Hlane Royal National Park and Mlilwane's neighbours sit, and it gets noticeably hotter. The Lowveld (the low, dry bush country) can feel heavy in summer. If you're planning a safari as well as a city stop, expect a warmer trip than Mbabane's numbers suggest.
Dry season: April to September
This is the best window, and our data agrees. Days are sunny and comfortable, and the rain mostly stops. Evenings in the highlands get properly cold in June and July, so you'll want a jacket for a night in Ezulwini Valley.
Winter is also the best time for wildlife. The bush is thinner and animals gather at waterholes, so rhino and elephant are easier to spot at Hlane and Mkhaya. Hiking up Sibebe Rock, one of the world's largest granite domes, is far more pleasant in cool, dry weather. Slippery rock and rain don't mix.
Summer: October to March
Summer is hot and green. December is the hottest month at 28°C, and January is the wettest with 144 mm. Rain usually comes as big afternoon storms, so mornings are often clear. Roads to remote spots can turn muddy.
It's not a bad time if you like quiet. Lodges are often emptier and the hills look lush. Just plan outdoor days for the morning.
Events and busy periods
Two events shape the calendar. Umhlanga, the Reed Dance, takes place in late August or early September, when thousands of young women gather to honour the Queen Mother. Incwala, the sacred kingship ceremony, falls around December or January. Dates shift each year, and some parts of Incwala are closed to visitors, so ask locally.
The Bushfire Festival, a big music event near Malkerns, is held in late May or early June. Beds fill up fast around it.
South African school holidays, especially July and December, bring more visitors from across the border. Low season is the wet summer, apart from the December holiday rush.
