When to visit Dominica
Dry season is the sweet spot
If you want the easiest weather, aim for February or March. Roseau, the capital, is at its best then. Days are warm, the rain eases off, and the trails are drier underfoot. That matters on Dominica, where the big walks get muddy fast.
The dry months also suit hiking. The Waitukubuli National Trail runs the length of the island, and the hike to the Boiling Lake is a long, steep day. It's far more pleasant when the ground isn't slick. Snorkelling and diving at Champagne Reef and Scotts Head are also good then.
Hot and wet: September to October
September is the hottest month in Roseau at 29°C. It's sticky, especially in town in the afternoons. October is the wettest at 189 mm, so expect heavy showers that turn rivers brown and rainforest paths into streams.
This is also hurricane season, which runs roughly June to November. Dominica has been hit hard before, so check forecasts and get travel insurance that covers storms. If you hate crowds, you'll love the quiet. Some small guesthouses and tour operators may be less busy or closed, though, so confirm before you go.
Events, holidays and crowds
High season runs from about December to April, when northern visitors want winter sun. Rooms in Roseau and along the coast fill up, and the island is still never crowded in the way bigger Caribbean islands are.
Carnival is the big one. Dominicans call it Mas Domnik, and it runs through the weeks before Ash Wednesday, usually February or early March. Roseau gets loud, colourful and busy, with street parades and calypso. Book a room early if you want to go. Independence Day on 3 November brings a week of local events, including Creole celebrations in late October. The Creole in Music festival also happens around then.
Travelling with kids? Aim for the dry months, but avoid Carnival if you'd like quiet streets. For the best mix of good weather and a calm island, late February or March is hard to beat.
