When to visit Denmark
Copenhagen sets the pace
Most visitors to Denmark spend time in Copenhagen, so its weather shapes the best time to go. The city does best from June to July, with September a calm third choice. July is the warmest month at 21°C. That's pleasant rather than hot. You'll want a light jacket for the evenings by the harbour at Nyhavn.
Our site only lists Copenhagen, so we can't compare cities here. The rest of the country has a similar climate. Jutland, the big western peninsula, is often windier near the North Sea coast. Places like Skagen, at the northern tip, can feel cooler than the capital.
Summer, autumn and the dark months
Summer is high season. Days are long, and the light lingers late into the evening. You can swim at Amager Strandpark or cycle along the waterfront well after dinner. Tivoli Gardens is open in summer, and the Roskilde Festival, a huge music event, takes over the town of Roskilde in early July. Trains and rooms fill up around it.
August is the wettest month, at 85 mm. It's still warm enough for outdoor plans. Pack a rain jacket and keep a museum in reserve, such as the National Museum or the Louisiana gallery north of the city.
September is quieter. Crowds thin out and the light turns soft. It's a good pick if you like walking Copenhagen's parks without a crush.
Winter is low season. It's dark early and often damp. But you'll get cosy cafés, pastries and Christmas markets. Tivoli puts on a festive season, and the lights make the cold easier to take.
Holidays and crowds
Danish school summer holidays run from late June into early August. Locals head to beach houses and campsites, so seaside towns get busy. Copenhagen itself feels a little emptier, though tourists fill the gap.
Easter and Christmas are public holidays, and many shops close on those days. Midsummer Eve on 23 June brings bonfires to the coast, a lovely local tradition. If you hate crowds, try early September or late May. You'll still get decent weather, and queues will be shorter.
