Moroni and the other islands

Comoros is three main islands: Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan. Our data covers Moroni, the capital on Grande Comore, so treat it as a guide for the whole country rather than a perfect match. Mohéli and Anjouan are greener and often wetter in the hills, while Grande Comore has the volcano, Mount Karthala, and drier, rockier ground near the coast.

The seasons

The best stretch in Moroni is June to November. That's the drier, cooler part of the year. Days are warm but not heavy, evenings are comfortable, and the sea is calm enough for snorkelling and boat trips. It's also the time to look for humpback whales around the islands, usually from about July into the early spring months. Climbing Karthala is much easier when the trails aren't slick with rain.

The hot, wet season runs the other way. March is the hottest month in Moroni at 29°C, and January is the wettest with 206 mm of rain. Expect sticky afternoons, heavy downpours and muddy tracks. Roads and ferries can be slower, and some hikes aren't worth trying. If you don't mind rain and want quiet beaches, it can still work, but plan for flexible days.

Holidays, crowds and timing

Comoros is mostly Muslim, so Ramadan shapes daily life. Many restaurants close by day and the pace slows, then evenings come alive after sunset. Eid al-Fitr, at the end of Ramadan, is a big family occasion, and flights and boats can fill up. The dates move earlier each year, so check them before you book. Independence Day on 6 July is also a national holiday, with celebrations in Moroni.

Many visitors are Comorians living abroad who come home in July and August. That makes these months the busiest for flights and rooms, even though the weather is lovely. If you want the best balance, try September or October. You'll get dry weather, easier bookings and calmer beaches.
