When to visit Brunei

One city, one climate

Our site covers Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, so that's where this guide focuses. Brunei is small. The weather in Temburong, the rainforest district across the bay, and in Kuala Belait, the oil town to the west, is much the same. The real difference is your plans, not the place. Jungle trips care more about rain than city sightseeing does.

Seasons: hot all year, wet at the end

Brunei sits close to the equator, so it's warm every month. May is the hottest at 30°C, but it's only a little warmer than the rest of the year. Afternoons feel sticky whatever the month.

Rain is what changes. December is the wettest, with 346 mm. Expect heavy downpours that can flood roads and make river trips slow. The data points to February and March as the best months. They're drier, so you can walk around Kampong Ayer, the famous stilt-house water village, without ducking under a roof every hour. Boat rides to see proboscis monkeys are easier then too.

Hiking in Ulu Temburong National Park is also better in drier spells. Trails get slippery, and longboat journeys can be cancelled when rivers run high.

Holidays, events and crowds

Brunei doesn't get big tourist crowds, so "high season" is more about local holidays than visitor numbers. Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the festival at the end of Ramadan, is the big one. Many shops and restaurants close for a few days, and families travel. The date moves each year, so check it before you book flights.

During Ramadan itself, eating and drinking in public is frowned upon in daytime. Many cafés close until sunset. Then the night markets, like Gadong, come alive with grilled meats and sweet treats. It's a lovely time to be there if you're happy with a slower daytime pace.

National Day on 23 February fits neatly with the best weather. You'll see parades and flags around the capital. The Sultan's birthday on 15 July also brings celebrations.

School holidays bring more local travel, but hotels rarely feel packed. If you want dry weather, quiet streets and open cafés, aim for February or March, and avoid Ramadan if you want to eat out at lunch.
