When to visit Benin
Porto-Novo and the south
Our data covers Porto-Novo, the capital, which sits in the humid south near the coast. The north of Benin, around Pendjari National Park, has a different pattern. It has one long dry season and one rainy season, so don't assume the southern rhythm applies there.
December and January are the best months in Porto-Novo. Days are dry and the air feels lighter than the rest of the year. This is also when the Harmattan blows in. That's a dusty wind from the Sahara that can leave a pale haze over the sky. It's pleasant for walking, though photos can look flat.
The seasons
The south has two rainy seasons, with the heaviest rain in June. That's the wettest month at 221 mm. Red dirt roads turn to mud, and trips between towns take longer. Showers often come in sharp bursts, so mornings can still be fine for the Royal Palace of Porto-Novo or the Ethnographic Museum.
February is the hottest month at 31°C. It's dry but sticky, especially in the afternoon. Plan your walks in the Grand Marché area for the morning, then rest in the shade or by the lagoon.
Heading north? The dry months are the best time for wildlife in Pendjari, because animals gather near the remaining water. Rainy-season tracks there can be hard to use.
Events, crowds and high season
Benin's high season runs roughly from December to January. Expect more visitors, plus returning family members at Christmas. Rooms in Cotonou, the nearby main city, fill faster then.
The big date is 10 January, National Voodoo Day. Ouidah hosts the main celebrations, with drumming, dancing and processions. If you want to see it, base yourself nearby and expect crowded roads. Be respectful: ask before taking photos of ceremonies.
Low season is the rainy months, especially June. You'll find quieter streets and easier bookings. You'll also deal with mud and slower travel.
Our advice? Come in December or January for the easiest trip, and go north in the dry months for wildlife.
