When to visit Armenia
Yerevan sets the tone
Yerevan is the only city we list for Armenia, so it's our best guide to timing. October is the best month. The summer heat has gone, the light is soft, and the markets are full of grapes, pomegranates and walnuts.
August is the hottest month, at 36°C. Afternoons in the capital are fierce, and many locals head to the hills or to Lake Sevan. May is the wettest month, at 61 mm. Even then, expect showers rather than days of rain.
Armenia is mountainous, so the country feels different from the capital. Yerevan sits low and gets hot. Places like Dilijan, with its forested hills, and Lake Sevan stay cooler in summer. In winter they get much colder and snowier than the city. We don't have figures for those places, so treat this as general guidance.
The seasons
Spring is good for monasteries such as Khor Virap, with Mount Ararat behind it. Skies can be hazy, and the odd shower is likely. Summer suits lake days and high-altitude hiking. In the city, plan your sightseeing around evenings on Republic Square and the Cascade steps.
Autumn is the sweet spot for road trips to Garni, Geghard and the wine villages around Areni. Winter is quiet and cold. If you like snow, Tsaghkadzor is the main ski area, and Yerevan feels cosy rather than busy.
Holidays and crowds
Armenia's busiest period runs from late spring through early autumn. Summer brings diaspora visitors (Armenians who live abroad) and tour groups. Book rooms early for July and August.
New Year and Christmas are big. Armenian Christmas falls on 6 January, and many people take the first week of January off. Some shops and offices close. Independence Day on 21 September and Victory and Peace Day on 9 May also bring events and closures in the capital.
Travelling with kids? Late spring and early autumn avoid both the heat and the holiday crowds. If you hate crowds, aim for October or April.
