When to visit Antigua and Barbuda
Dry season: January to April
If you want sunshine without sticky nights, aim for January to April. These months are the best on our data for Saint John's, the capital. Days are warm, the trade winds keep things comfortable, and showers pass quickly. It's good weather for Antigua's beaches, like Dickenson Bay and Half Moon Bay, and for the walk up to Shirley Heights.
This is also high season, so flights and rooms fill up. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of all. Travelling with kids? Easter school holidays bring more families, so beach bars and boat trips get busier.
Summer and the wet months
Things heat up as the year goes on. September is the hottest month in Saint John's at 29°C, and it feels muggy, especially when the breeze drops. October is the wettest, with 181 mm of rain. Expect heavy downpours that can flood low roads, then bright skies again.
Hurricane season runs from June to November, and the risk is highest in late summer and autumn. It's honest to say some hotels and restaurants close for a few weeks around September and October. If you don't mind that, you'll get quiet beaches and lower prices. Buy travel insurance that covers storms.
Events that shape your trip
Two events matter most. Sailing Week, held in late April or early May at English Harbour, fills the harbour with racing yachts and the nearby bars with crews. Book rooms early if you'll be there. Carnival is the other big one. It runs from late July into early August, with steel bands, costumes and street parties in Saint John's. It's loud, colourful and fun, but it falls in the hotter, wetter part of the year.
Barbuda
Barbuda is Antigua's quiet sister island, reached by ferry or a short flight. It's flat and dry, and it's known for the long pink-tinged sand at Princess Diana Beach. Calm, sunny days between January and April make the crossing easier. In hurricane season, boats can be cancelled, so keep a spare day in your plans.
